What type of Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you think like most homeowners, finding window treatments in San Jose that offer privacy and sound control to maintain your sanctuary is a concern. Any window treatment is preferable to an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, even on hard to cover windows.

Providing Privacy on Specialty Windows

All of the large, standard windows in your home are a snap to cover with just about any window treatment such as blinds, shades, or shutters in San Jose.

But there might be some situations when you need a particular kind of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These could be:

  • Bathroom windows where water and humidity can damage fabric window treatments.

  • Entryway sidelights that are long and skinny on which window treatments can be jostled around by the door’s movement.

  • Irregular windows like arches, round windows, bow windows, etc., where conventional rectangular blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without covering up the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll want window treatments that go the distance to add privacy to your house.

As a plus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing.

The Window Treatments That Give You The Most Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is what you want. To let light in and see outside, just give the louvers a tilt. For taller windows, you should position the louvers at an angle so light can come in but passersby can’t see in.

Indoor shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are water resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another great window treatment for privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. Though they can’t be cut to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from moisture-resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Help With Privacy

While any window treatment offers a basic level of privacy, there are a few that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add an airy feeling to a room. But they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, especially when it’s dark out.

Another window covering we don’t recommend for privacy are aluminum or bulky blinds, which can bend and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t totally shut the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
